How big is UK private healthcare, and why is demand rising?

LaingBuisson estimated the UK private acute healthcare sector at £13.8 billion in 2024, and PHIN recorded a record 953,000 private hospital admissions in 2025, 670,000 of them insurance-funded. Separately, NHS England reported 7.4 million waiting pathways in England at the end of August 2026. These sources do not show that waits caused the private demand.

Key takeaways

  • Demand is at record levels: 953,000 admissions at UK private hospitals in 2025, the fourth record year in a row (PHIN).
  • NHS England reported 7.4 million waiting pathways in August 2026, with only 65.2% waiting up to 18 weeks against a 92% standard. These are England figures, not UK-wide.
  • Ipsos found 66% of surveyed GB adults looked up symptoms online in the previous year and 28% reported having used an AI chatbot for their health.
  • 670,000 insurance-funded admissions in 2025 against 283,000 self-pay, which rose only slightly (PHIN).
  • In our audit of clinic websites, 5.3% showed any sign of a CRM and 45% had no detectable online booking.

Method: a desk audit of 4,000+ clinic websites (some measures use a smaller set where a technology could be detected), plus 30 survey responses and 10 interviews, fieldwork January to March 2025, in collaboration with Health Foundry. The survey is directional, not definitive. The llms.txt figure measures file adoption only; it does not establish AI readiness or visibility. Read the study: Patient Pulse 2025.

How we compiled this page. Third-party figures are dated and linked to the publisher’s page or document. We did not include figures from vendors without a published method. Where sources use different years (for example LaingBuisson for 2024 and PHIN for 2025), the period is shown on each figure.
